Nate Diaz shocked the combined martial arts planet earlier this month after he handed UFC gold boy Conor McGregor his first loss within the Octagon. Diaz had stepped in as an injury replacement for UFC lightweight winner Rafael dos Anjos on 11 days’ notice. Before the loss, McGregor had shot the UFC by storm, winning his first seven bouts, making six knockouts in the procedure including an incredibly 13 second success over then-champion Jose Aldo last December to catch the featherweight belt. Diaz, on the other hand, was the winner of The Ultimate Fighter season five and had experienced an up-and-down UFC profession, making a title shot in 2012, but failing to get to the top of the promotion. The victory over McGregor immediately made him a leading contender. MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas had this to say about the rematch:
With a rumored Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz rematch in the works for UFC 200, the odds are going to be radically different this time around. Diaz took McGregor’s best shots within their UFC 196 major event, weathering the early storm before hurting McGregor and finishing him via entry in the next. Diaz took the first battle on 11 days’ notice while McGregor was originally planning to compete 15 pounds lighter for its UFC lightweight title. Having a complete training camp to prepareyourself, both fighters will probably be more familiar with each other and we could expect a more educated human boxing game. Diaz’s assurance will be higher now, but McGregor also understands he was doing severe damage in the first round before slowing down. All that aside, McGregor is still the hottest male fighter on the roster and he must have tons of support in the gambling public. If the bout occurs in welterweight (170 lbs), McGregor will be the -155 favored with all the comeback on Diaz being +125. If the bout instead takes place in lightweight, McGregor will be a -170 betting favored with Diaz coming in as a +140 underdog.
